For South America, alpacas are a very important species – they are bred solely for their natural fiber, which is then made into a specific soft type of wool. Unlike their cousin the llama, alpacas are not used as working animals.
Every two years, the Alpaca Fiesta is hosted – a huge event in Arequipa (Peru) that focuses on the alpaca and their wool. Next to seeing beautiful herds of alpaca, the programme hosts fashion shows, exhibitions, cocktail nights and alpaca judging. As we at INTI only use baby alpaca wool, of course we were present to watch the show!
And – a fiesta it is. A true spectacle to see native peoples and communities from all sorts of villages across the country come together in Arequipa to discuss the value of the alpaca. To us, it’s an animal that can impossibly be left out of our story.
